Susanne Schirdewahn

A Fernweh-card from SUSANNE SCHIRDEWAHN, sent from Berlin to my Berlin adress, along with a corresponding homesickness - postcard. I got to know Susanne he first time some month after my stay in Nebraska City and invited her to take part at the project nevetheless. We met during an interview she with me about the Anonymous Drawings Project last summer.

Susanne is an extremly mulitfacated artist: She writes, draws and paints. Her newspaper columns for Berliner Zeitung are always fun to read - they show a lot of her fine sense of humor matched by a great sensibility for the people she talks with.

Ilse Ermen

Another postcard from ILSE ERMEN. Life is good! Ilse took the motive of an original postcard from Ann Arbour, Michigan / 1995

Markus Bickel

A postcard from MARKUS BICKEL sent from Kairo, Egypt.
Markus and I know each other quite a long time, we attended the same grammar school and met there some day in the 80s. There are lot of shared memories about growing up in a small town in Germany of the Eighties.

Markus was born 1971 in Caracas/Venezuela. He did several trips through Chiapas, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Brazil in the 1990s. And after finishing journalism school in Munich (DJS) and his studies of political science in Berlin he stayed in the Old World: first as editor of the weekly “Jungle World”, then as Balkans-correspondent, based in Sarajevo. He wrote about the former Yugoslav postwar-republics until 2005, when he left Europe for the Middle East. From Lebanon he reported for Spiegel Online, Die Zeit, and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.). In 2008 he joined Germany’s leading daily as editor. Since 2012 he works as Middle East Correspondent for F.A.Z. in Cairo. http://www.weltkiosk.net/markus-bickel

Alex Booth

A postcard from ALEXANDER BOOTH, sent from Berlin, Germany: "The postcard is a watercolor & colored pencil treatment of a photocopy of an old rendering of the 1st century BCE mausoleum dedicated to Cecilia Metella, which is located at the beginning of the Appia Antica in Rome. The tomb was partially built on lava rock, which was believed to be indestructible & so too, by extension, the memory &, more importantly, love of she in whose honor the tomb had been constructed. It has long been a very important place to me." Alex moved from Rome to Berlin, Schöneberg, two years ago. He was born and raised in the USA and grew up bilingual, speaking English and German. Alex and I met in Rome in 2005 where he lived at the time and I had a temporary artist grant at the Casa di Goethe.

Alex's book-length translation of German poet Lutz Seiler's in field latin is forthcoming in 2016 with Seagull Books. Other work has most recently appeared in Beloit Poetry Journal, Massachusetts Review, PEN America Journal, & Poems in Which. In addition, he keeps a weblog on (mostly) Rome in literature and Roman literature, Misera e stupenda città. Work can also be found at https://wordkunst.wordpress.com/
